Travel to Vietnam in October – Useful information for travellers

If you are considering travel to Vietnam in October, you are choosing an interesting time to discover the country. But there is one important thing to understand before planning your trip: Vietnam does not have the same weather everywhere in October.

From our experience arranging private journeys for international travellers, October can be one of the best months for exploring Northern Vietnam. Hanoi becomes cooler and more comfortable, the rice terraces around Mu Cang Chai are turning golden, and destinations such as Ninh Binh, Sapa, Ha Giang and Ha Long Bay can be particularly rewarding.

Central Vietnam is different. Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang can experience periods of heavy rain and storms, so we normally recommend keeping this part of the itinerary flexible.

In Southern Vietnam, the weather remains warm and tropical, with occasional rain showers. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta are still worth visiting, while Phu Quoc becomes increasingly attractive towards the end of the rainy season.
So, where should you go and how should you plan your Vietnam trip in October?

Weather in Vietnam During October

Vietnam's climate is divided into three main regions, and this becomes especially important when planning a trip in October.

Weather in Northern Vietnam

For many travellers, October is one of the most attractive months to visit Northern Vietnam.
Hanoi is generally cooler than during the summer, making it much more comfortable for walking around the Old Quarter, visiting historical sites and enjoying the city's famous street food.

Further north, the mountain regions become even more interesting.
Sapa's famous rice terraces are around harvest time, while Mu Cang Chai offers some of the most impressive golden rice landscapes in Vietnam. 

Ha Giang is also an excellent choice for travellers looking for dramatic mountain scenery and authentic local experiences.

From our experience, we particularly recommend Northern Vietnam in October to travellers who enjoy photography, trekking, nature and local cultural experiences.

Weather in Central Vietnam

Central Vietnam requires more consideration.
Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang enter a wetter period in October, and heavy rain or tropical storms are possible. This does not mean that you cannot visit Central Vietnam, but your itinerary should be flexible.

For our private tours, we prefer to monitor the weather forecast and adjust the programme when necessary rather than simply following a fixed schedule.

If the main purpose of your trip is mountain scenery and outdoor activities, we would normally give more time to Northern Vietnam in October.

Weather in Southern Vietnam

Southern Vietnam remains warm and humid in October.
Ho Chi Minh City can experience short but heavy afternoon showers. We usually recommend doing sightseeing and outdoor activities in the morning and keeping some flexibility for the afternoon.

The Mekong Delta is still an interesting destination during this period. Ben Tre, Can Tho and Chau Doc offer completely different experiences from the major cities and mountain areas of Northern Vietnam.

For travellers who want to finish their journey with some beach time, Phu Quoc can also be considered as the weather begins to improve towards the end of the rainy season.

Best Places to Visit in Vietnam in October

Hanoi: Hanoi is an excellent starting point for travel to Vietnam in October.

The cooler autumn atmosphere makes it pleasant to explore the Old Quarter on foot, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and discover local food.

One of the things we particularly enjoy showing our guests is the less obvious side of Hanoi: small local restaurants, traditional cafés, old residential streets and neighbourhoods away from the main tourist attractions.

If you have never visited Vietnam before, we recommend spending at least two full days in Hanoi rather than treating it simply as an arrival and departure point.

Sapa: Sapa is ideal for travellers who enjoy mountains, trekking and photography.

October is especially interesting because the rice terraces around Sapa are approaching harvest. Depending on the exact location and timing, you may see beautiful golden terraces across the valleys.
For a more authentic experience, consider staying in a local homestay and walking through villages rather than spending all your time in Sapa town.

Ninh Binh:  Ninh Binh is one of our favourite destinations to combine with Hanoi.

The landscape of limestone mountains, rivers and rice fields makes it very different from the mountainous scenery of Sapa or Ha Giang.

A boat trip through Trang An, a visit to Bich Dong Pagoda and the viewpoint at Mua Cave can be combined into a relaxed two-day experience.

For private travellers, we particularly recommend allowing enough time to enjoy the countryside rather than trying to visit too many attractions in one day.

Traveling to Ninh Binh in October

Ha Long Bay: An overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay remains one of the classic experiences of travel to Vietnam.

October can offer pleasant cruising conditions, although weather systems can still affect cruise operations. This is another reason why we recommend keeping some flexibility in an October itinerary.

For travellers who prefer a quieter experience, we often look at different cruise routes and departure points rather than automatically choosing the most popular option.

Do not miss out to visit Halong Bay/Lan Ha Bay in October

Ha Giang: Ha Giang is one of the best destinations for adventurous travellers visiting Vietnam in October.

The dramatic mountain roads, limestone landscapes, deep valleys and ethnic minority villages create an unforgettable road trip.

However, Ha Giang is not a destination we recommend simply because it is beautiful. The journey involves long driving days and winding mountain roads. 

For guests who prefer a slower pace, we normally design the itinerary with additional stops and overnight stays rather than trying to cover too much distance each day.

Travelling to Ha Giang in October is a great time - With Ama Journey

Mu Cang Chai: If photography is one of your main interests, Mu Cang Chai in October deserves special attention.

The terraced rice fields around areas such as La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh can turn into spectacular shades of gold around harvest time.

This is also an excellent area for walking and trekking. However, the difficulty varies considerably depending on the route. Some village walks are relatively easy, while longer routes involve repeated uphill and downhill sections.

Our advice is simple: do not choose a trekking route only because it looks beautiful in photographs. The route should match your fitness level and the weather conditions on the day.


Golden rice season in Mu Cang Chai in the early October - Travelling with Ama Journey 

Pu Luong Nature Reserve: Pu Luong is one of our favourite choices for travellers looking for a quieter mountain escape in Northern Vietnam.

Located within easy reach of Hanoi compared with destinations such as Ha Giang or Mu Cang Chai, Pu Luong offers a combination of green mountains, rice terraces, traditional villages and peaceful walking trails.
October is particularly appealing because the rice terraces can take on beautiful golden colours around harvest time.

Mai Chau: Just a few hours from Hanoi, Mai Chau is another excellent destination to include in a Northern Vietnam itinerary.

The valley is surrounded by green mountains and dotted with traditional villages, rice fields and stilt houses. Travellers can explore the countryside by bicycle, walk through local villages or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

October is a particularly pleasant period for outdoor activities, with more comfortable temperatures than during the summer.

Ba Be Lake: If you want to go further off the beaten path, Ba Be Lake is well worth considering.

Ba Be is surrounded by limestone mountains, forests and small ethnic minority communities. The area offers a very different experience from the more famous destinations of Sapa and Ha Giang.

Travellers can take a boat on Ba Be Lake, visit caves and waterfalls, walk through local villages and enjoy the peaceful natural environment.

It can also be combined with a longer Northern Vietnam adventure linking Hanoi with Ba Be, Cao Bang and Ban Gioc Waterfall.

Ho Chi Minh City: Ho Chi Minh City offers a completely different atmosphere from Northern Vietnam.

It is energetic, modern and busy, but also full of historical buildings, traditional markets and excellent food.

October showers do not necessarily prevent you from enjoying the city. With a private itinerary, sightseeing can be arranged around the weather, leaving time for cafés, local restaurants or indoor attractions when rain arrives.

Mekong Delta: Ben Tre, Can Tho and Chau Doc

The Mekong Delta is particularly suitable for travellers who want to experience everyday life in Southern Vietnam.

In Ben Tre, you can explore small waterways surrounded by coconut palms. Can Tho is known for its floating market, while Chau Doc provides a more remote and culturally diverse experience.

We normally recommend avoiding a rushed one-day Mekong Delta excursion from Ho Chi Minh City if time allows. Spending at least one night in the region gives you a much better opportunity to experience the quieter side of the Mekong.

Phu Quoc Island: If you want several days of relaxation after travelling around Vietnam, Phu Quoc is worth considering.

October is a transition period for the island's weather, so conditions can vary, particularly at the beginning of the month. For this reason, we prefer to check the latest weather conditions before recommending a longer beach stay.

For travellers looking for peace and privacy, choosing the right area and resort is just as important as choosing Phu Quoc itself.

Con Dao Island: Con Dao is an alternative for travellers who want a quieter island experience.

It is less developed and generally more peaceful than the major beach destinations. The combination of beaches, forests, marine life and history makes it particularly appealing to travellers who prefer nature and tranquillity.

Suggested Vietnam Itinerary in October

One of the biggest mistakes we see when planning a Vietnam trip in October is trying to cover the entire country without considering regional weather.

Instead, we recommend building the itinerary around the best conditions in each region.

1 Week Trip in Vietnam

For one week, we recommend concentrating on Northern Vietnam.
This is some interesting options for your reference:
Option 1: Hanoi - Sapa - Halong Bay
Option 2: Hanoi - Ninh Binh - Halong Bay
Option 3: Northwest Vietnam exploration: Ha Giang and Ban Gioc waterfall

This gives first-time visitors a good introduction to Vietnamese culture, countryside and landscapes without spending too much time travelling between destinations.

10 Day Trip in Vietnam

With 10 days, you can add one mountain destination.
Hanoi – Sapa – Ha Long Bay – Ho Chi Minh and Mekong
For more adventurous travellers, Sapa can be replaced with Ha Giang or Mu Cang Chai.
We would not recommend adding all three mountain destinations into a 10-day trip. Although they look relatively close on a map, travelling through the mountains takes considerably longer than travelling between major cities.

14 Day Trip in Vietnam

With two weeks, you can create a more diverse itinerary.

One option is:
Hanoi – Ha Giang – Ninh Binh – Ha Long Bay – Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta – Phu Quoc
This combination gives you mountains, countryside, culture, city life, local experiences and beach relaxation.

Another option is to include Central Vietnam:
Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Ha Long Bay – Hoi An – Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta
However, because October can bring heavy rain to Central Vietnam, we recommend checking the forecast before confirming the exact number of nights in Hoi An and Hue.

Our Advice for Travelling to Vietnam in October

If you ask us whether October is a good month to travel to Vietnam, our answer is yes — but the route matters more than the month itself.

If your priority is beautiful landscapes, trekking and photography, we would put Northern Vietnam high on your list.

If you want beaches, Phu Quoc or Con Dao can be considered, but weather conditions should be checked carefully.

If you want to visit Hoi An and Hue, keep your itinerary flexible because Central Vietnam can be wet and stormy.

And if you are travelling with older family members or prefer a relaxed holiday, do not try to fit too many destinations into one trip. Vietnam is larger and journeys often take longer than they appear on the map.
